Earn College Credits - VM 369 Outdoor Ministry Practicum

Concordia University, St. Paul, MN has a long tradition of supporting outdoor ministry through a partnership ministry with the National Outdoor Lutheran Ministry Association (NLOMA).  One aspect of this partnership involves helping camp counselors draw together their learning from the camp experience and to then receive academic credit for the experience.  Over fifty students have utilized this course with favorable response.

WHAT IS THE ADVANTAGE OF THIS COURSE?  The student receives guided reading and the opportunity for interaction and reflection through both the site supervisor and the college supervisor.  The student who takes the full benefit of the experience will be enriched through dialogue and discussion and has the opportunity for written reflections and interaction throughout the experience.  This is a learn-by-doing and reflecting course.

WHAT IS THE COURSE DESCRIPTION?  VM 369 Outdoor Ministry Practicum - The course provides students with the opportunity for direct on-site camp counseling experience.  Students will have the opportunity to work with all age groups in a camp setting using skills in teaching, small group dynamics, leadership, team ministry, communication, recreation, and outdoor education.  Students must apply and be accepted on the summer staff of a campsite approved by Concordia University before applying for academic credit.  Admission to this course is by the permission of the instructor.  This course offers 2 semester credits.  Students who are interested in receiving additional academic credit for field work (maximum of two field work credits) should meet with the instructor.

DO YOU HAVE TO BE A STUDENT AT CONCORDIA, ST. PAUL?  No!  A student from any college or university may enroll in this course. We have a special summer registration procedure (and reduced summer rates) and this will in no way affect your enrollment elsewhere.  Once your grade has been issued you can have your transcript sent to the college or university of your choice to serve as a graduation requirement or an elective.

HOW DO I ENROLL?  Return the bottom portion of
this registration form and we will assist you in the enrollment procedure.  You must be enrolled prior to May 15 in order to receive credit.
